Weather: Sunny & warm
Finds: 75 & 104
I decided to try somewhere different on these two days: a point just west of the 'Rand'.
The Rand itself used to be known as a good spot for finding shark teeth but has since been given up on by serious collectors, as local fishermen as messed it up looking for bait. It's a kind of pebble promontory which extends out into the sea for maybe 50 metres at low tide (See picture at the bottom of my Home page). It's an unusual feature and possibly man-made. Anyway, where it joins the shoreline, it spreads out as a noticeable mound on the shore. It's possible to find fossils in amongst the pebbles of this mound but I discovered the best place to look was just west of this mound, where you see the sand again. By the second day, I was finding teeth at quite a decent rate. I'm definitely going back there next time.
This spot seemed to be quite popular with parents taking their children to look for fossils, especially on the Rand. As a few of them seemed to be struggling to find much, I decided to give them a few tips on where and how to look. They soon started finding stuff. One boy in particular definitely got 'his eye in' and finding them regularly. He even found an angel shark tooth! You don't see too many of those.
